The question

A chart made in memory

What can a sky from that night honestly be?

It is a record of where the stars were above a place at a time. It does not claim anything more than that, and it does not need to.

What this one leaves off

Choosing In memory changes the chart rather than only the words on it. The constellation figures come off, and so do the coordinate grid, the planets and the star names. What is left is the stars, the horizon, and the line of text underneath.

That is not a lesser version. The joining lines between stars are a convention, drawn by people, and useful when you are trying to find something. Here there is nothing to find. Everything that was added for navigation has been taken back off, and the plate is quieter for it.

If you do not know the hour

Often there is no exact time, or there is one and you would rather not put it on a wall. The tool starts at nine in the evening, and a date on its own is a perfectly legitimate chart.

If you do want an hour and are choosing freely, the evening is usually the honest one: it is when that sky was actually overhead and visible, rather than sitting behind daylight.

What the chart is, and is not

It is a drawing of real positions, computed from the same measurements astronomers use, for one place and one moment. Everything on it can be checked.

It makes no claim about where anyone is. Nothing here suggests a star belongs to a person, and there is no register anywhere that assigns one — the naming schemes sold for that purpose have no standing with any astronomical body. What this can honestly say is narrower and, we think, better: on that night, above that place, the sky looked like this.

The words underneath

A heading and one line below it. A name and a date is usually the whole of what wants saying, and reads as intended for far longer than a phrase chosen while upset.

The place and the coordinates print underneath on their own, so the words do not have to carry that information.

There is nothing to pay

The file downloads free, at full print resolution, with no account and no watermark, and that matters more here than anywhere else on this site. Nobody should meet a payment form in the middle of making this.

If you have it printed and framed later, that is a separate decision made somewhere else, at whatever moment suits.
