Which star moves fastest across our sky, and why did it fool astronomers for decades?
Every star drifts against the background. This one gallops — and for half a century it was also the most famous false alarm in the search for other worlds.
A quarter of a degree per century
Barnard's Star crosses our sky faster than any other known star, covering roughly the width of the full Moon every 180 years. E. E. Barnard measured the motion in 1916, and it has been the record ever since.
That speed is mostly an illusion of proximity. At just under six light-years it is the second-closest system to the Sun, and nearby things appear to move quickly for the same reason a passing lamppost blurs while distant hills do not. It is genuinely travelling fast, but what makes it exceptional is how close it is while doing so.
The planets that were not there
From the 1960s, Peter van de Kamp reported wobbles in the star's path and attributed them to giant planets. The claim stood for years and shaped a generation's expectations about how common planets might be. It was wrong: the wobbles tracked adjustments made to the telescope, not the star, and appeared in other stars measured with the same instrument.
It is a useful piece of history for a site like this one. The error was not fraud or carelessness — it was a real signal in the data that belonged to the apparatus rather than the sky. Planets around Barnard's Star have since been reported with entirely different methods, and the modern detections are small, close-in worlds rather than the gas giants that were announced first.
